AdBlue
AdBlue is a clear, non-toxic and very pure urea solution consisting of ammonia and 32.5% demineralized water, among others. The additive is injected directly into the exhaust gas, directly into the SCR/NOx catalyst located in the exhaust, behind the particulate filter. However, a disadvantage of AdBlue is that it can crystallize and is corrosive to metals. This crystallization can clog or damage mechanical components such as NOx sensors, AdBlue injectors, the SCR catalyst or the AdBlue pump/tank. With many brands, these are expensive parts. The cost of repairing an AdBlue pump and its attached module can be as high as €2000 or even higher for some brands.
Continuing to drive with an empty or broken AdBlue system is not a solution. On many models, in addition to an error message in the dashboard, the car will start counting down and be unable to start after a certain number of miles. In this case, the car must be reset with a special diagnostic tester before it can be started one more time for a one-way trip to the garage for repair or filling the AdBlue system.
